Revelation 21:4Those who have sorrow, pain and crying here on earth can be comforted knowing that there will be a day when we will feel none of these things – in Heaven. But God has given us the strength to fight through sorrow and pain on this earth. As believers, we are in the Kingdom today. Joshua 1:9 says, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” Psalm 34:18 says, “The Lord is near to the broken-hearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”Revelations 21:4 makes us understand that there is no sorrow in heaven. There are two valid interpretations of this verse. The first and most obvious one is that we will be free from all sorrow when we get to heaven after our race here on earth. The second is that we can have a glimpse of this experience right here on earth before we get to heaven. This is possible because the Holy Spirit living in all believers brings the realities of heaven right into us. Consequently, we can live in heaven right here on earth.Does this mean that we will not have any sorrow at all on earth? Not exactly. However, we are assured of the comforting work of the Holy Spirit in our moments of sorrow and grief (Matthew 5:4). This way, our sorrows are lifted and replaced with joy irrespective of life’s situations. God identifies with us in our moments of sorrows and pains. The Holy Spirit does the work of comfort in us every time we feel sorrow. The Bible calls the Holy Spirit our Comforter. Even when our sorrow is caused by wrong decisions we make, the Holy Spirit does not judge us, he comforts us instead. God sent the Holy Spirit to live in us because this world is full of pain and sorrow. We can only sail through by the power of the Holy Spirit.

The comforting work of the Holy Spirit in our everyday livesHow does the comfort of the Holy Spirit apply to real-life sorrow, due to death, loss or sickness? How do I feel the heavenly experience in times of sorrow and grief? Here are a few ways to connect to the comfort of heaven in your pain.
PrayerSolemn, humble prayer is what we are commanded to have. Let God know your requests. Speak to Him and ask for His help. We cannot do this on our own and we are not expected to. We speak to Him, humbly in prayer, asking for help with our sorrow. That is the application. No matter what happens, continue trusting in Him even though things might feel out of control. He is on the throne. He has overcome the world.Philippians 4:6 says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”The prayers that pour out from the sorrowful heart may not be the conventional prayer pattern, but God hears them. Pour out your griefs, problems and frustrations in prayer before God. He will comfort them all. Hannah poured her sorrowful heart before the Lord in prayer (1 Samuel 1:10). Her prayers were so unusual that Eli thought she was drunk but God saw the heart of a sorrowful woman and heard her requests. Prayer activates the comforting power of the Holy Spirit to uphold you in times of sorrow.
The word of GodThe word of God is another avenue the Holy Spirit uses to comfort us. His word speaks peace to our hearts in the middle of a storm. This is why it is important to have a life of intentional and consistent study of the Bible. In days of sorrow, even when we cannot find the strength to read the scriptures, the Holy Spirit comforts us by reminding us of scriptures we have read in time past that are helpful in seasons of sorrow. The Holy Spirit works in us by bringing to our remembrance the word of God in the time when we need it the most (John 14:26).The word of God helps us find comfort in times of distress and sorrow (1 Thessalonians 4:18). It is important to get the word of God in your heart ahead of these times.
Godly friendsThe Holy Spirit does not comfort us from the inside alone, he comforts us from the outside through other people. He sends godly friends to us in times of despair and sorrow. These friends speak to us by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and their words dissolve the burden of sorrow in us. Words spoken pleasantly and kindly are like honeycomb to the soul, they sweeten us from the inside out (Proverbs 16:24). The Bible instructs us to comfort one another and to help each other up in the time of sorrow (1 Thessalonians 5:11, Proverbs 27:17).Godly friends are vessels that God uses to lift our burdens through the power of the Holy Spirit in them. This is why it is important to keep godly friends and have a family of faith that can strengthen you in times of sorrow. Apart from God’s presence in heaven, there is also a community of God-centred beings that worship him day and night, this why there is no sorrow in heaven. To cast sorrow out of your life, follow this same pattern too. Don’t isolate yourself in times of sorrow, reach out to a friend, relative or spiritual family that can comfort you by the Holy Spirit.
