This specific 四字熟語 is exactly the same as the proverb in English, "kill 2 birds with one stone." I discover it to it is in a weird coincidence that both would have this phrase independently of each other, uneven killing bird by cram stones was just a really large thing earlier then. Go the copy the English? did the English copy the walk they both copy part Chinese proverb or something, or did it come from in other places entirely? Etymologically speaking where did 一石二鳥 come from?

And I"ll go ahead and also give an answer to this as well:

According to this, it to be translated directly from English right into a 四字熟語. This is amazing to me since 一挙両得 currently exists and way basically the exact same thing.

You are watching: Killing two birds with one stone origin

According come this site, that was presented as a phrase in Meiji Japan and then later on made into 4 characters. Ns don"t know the beginning of the phrase in English, however that"s out of the purview the this site!

Just renders me wonder what various other proverbs to be taken from English and also made into 四字熟語.

Although 故事ことわざ辞典 claims 一石二鳥 is a direct translation of ”kill two birds with one stone” into the type of 四字熟語 (Chinese / idioms written of four characters), ns not sure of it, since the Chinese have specifically the exact same phrase

一石二鳥 (yī shí èr niǎo).

We can have imported 一石二鳥 indigenous Chinese, or the Chinese imported the proverb we translated from English proverb, i don’t know.

As an antonym to 一石二鳥, we have

二兎を追うものは一兎も得ず He that chases two hares records neither.

Again, i can’t tell even if it is this is the translation of the English proverb or not.
